Customising the Fjifilm X100V 5 May 2020

There is an old joke about the photographer who said he might consider buying a Fujifilm camera if they ever managed to present the market with a finished product.

Fuji released the X100V with a rudimentary bump on the front where a handle might have been welcome and a barely detectable raised edge at the rear where many cameras have a proper thumb support.

You cannot fit a filter or hood on the lens without first mounting an adapter which Fuji does not supply in the box.

It’s not finished yet.   Not by Fuji anyway.

So the X100V buyer is left to scour the world over for aftermarket products if he or she wants a handle, thumb support, hood, filter and the required adapter.

I found the handle shown here on Ebay. It is unbranded but fits well and is well finished. It allows easy access to the battery and memory card, has three tripod sockets and an opening for the speaker.

The color shown here is “African Black”.

The handle is decently comfortable and provides a much more secure hold on the front than is achieved without the handle.

Search on Ebay for “Wooden hand grip bracket quick release L plate for Fuji X100V”.

The seller is austin.leit27

The thumb support is a very simple design but fits well and does its job quite well. Now my thumb has support when I hold the camera.  Access to the drive and  AEL buttons and rear dial is unimpeded.

Turning the shutter speed dial with the thumb support in place is possible but very awkward as is access to the ISO lift-up dial.

If you mostly use the camera in Aperture Priority mode with Auto ISO as I do this is not a deal breaker.

The Lensmate brand is advertising a model for the X100V with flip-out thumb section to enable access to the shutter speed dial.

The Haoge thumb support is available on Ebay.

Search for “Haoge thumbs up securely hand grip for Fujifilm X100V”.

With the handle and thumb support mounted I can obtain a secure five finger grip, including the little finger.

Note I also drilled a 1.5mm hole in the middle of the lens cap. The cap fits so snugly over the lens that air is not able to escape properly. This  prevents the cap from slipping on easily. The little hole solves this problem.

I have not yet gotten around to fitting a filter or hood and maybe will never do so as I don’t want the camera to get any larger.
