Sometimes I like to
play tourist in my home city. A fine sunny Saturday always makes for a
great day on the harbour so we spent a few hours on the ferries.
I took the Canon EOS R5 with an RF 100-400mm tele lens
mounted for the duration.
Most of the photos were made from the foredeck of a ferry
bouncing along in wind and waves.
In a recent blog I listed the RF 100-400mm as one of the
best value for money lenses in the RF mount catalogue. Today’s outing only
confirmed that evaluation.
The RF 100-400mm f5.6-8 IS USM does everything it should do
very well, with no significant faults or deficiencies. At the limit of optics
and performance it is not quite as good as the RF 100-500mm L lens but the smaller
100-400 is only a quarter the price of the L lens.
I am intrigued by photos which can be appreciated by viewing
the full frame but which reveal a whole new
level of detail when enlarged to 100%. Humans which are barely visible when
viewing the whole picture emerge to reveal their place in the greater firmament
when viewed up close.
The reproductions you see here have been compressed for the
internet. Even greater detail can be seen in the originals.
Here is a selection of pix from the day:
